In exit polls, it is often the case that the survey and the assumption are made to produce the opposite result.
As for the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the exit polls showed that the parties led by the BJP would get a majority.
All survey predictions seemed favorable for the NDA.
The NDTV-AC Nielsen exit poll predicted 230-250 seats for the NDA and 190-205 for the Congress, while the others were expected to get 100-120 seats.
The ORG-MARG exit poll so far has also given 248 seats to the NDA and 190 to the Congress, while predicting 105 seats for the others.

In short, the average exit poll gave the NDA 252 seats, while the actual NDA got 181 seats.
So BJP got only 138 seats and Congress got 145 seats.
